Normals estimation for digital surfaces based on convolutions
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we present a method that we call on-surface convolution which extends the classical notion of a 2D digital filter to the case of digital surfaces (following the cuberille model). We also define an averaging mask with local support which, when applied with the iterated convolution operator, behaves like an averaging with large support. The interesting property of the latter averaging is the way the resulting weights are distributed: given a digital surface obtained by discretization of a differentiable surface of R3, the masks isocurves are close to the Riemannian isodistance ciurves from the center of the mask. We eventually use the iterated averaging followed by convolutions with differentiation masks to estimate partial derivatives and then normal vectors over a surface. The number of iterations required to achieve a good estimate is determined experimentally on digitized spheres and tori. The precision of the normal estimation is also investigated according to the digitization step.

متن کاملRational surfaces with linear normals and their convolutions with rational surfaces
It is shown that polynomial (or rational) parametric surfaces with a linear field of normal vectors are dual to graphs bivariate polynomials (or rational functions). We discuss the geometric properties of these surfaces. In particular, using the dual representation it is shown that the convolution with general rational surfaces yields again rational surfaces. Similar results hold in the case of...
متن کاملMicrogeometry capture and RGB albedo estimation by photometric stereo without demosaicing
We present a photometric stereo-based system for retrieving the RGB albedo and the fine-scale details of an opaque surface. In order to limit specularities, the system uses a controllable diffuse illumination, which is calibrated using a dedicated procedure. In addition, we rather handle RAW, non-demosaiced RGB images, which both avoids uncontrolled operations on the sensor data and simplifies ...
متن کاملFocal surfaces of discrete geometry
The differential geometry of smooth three-dimensional surfaces can be interpreted from one of two perspectives: in terms of oriented frames located on the surface, or in terms of a pair of associated focal surfaces. These focal surfaces are swept by the loci of the principal curvatures’ radii. In this article, we develop a focal-surface-based differential geometry interpretation for discrete me...
متن کاملDigital cohomology groups of certain minimal surfaces
In this study, we compute simplicial cohomology groups with different coefficients of a connected sum of certain minimal simple surfaces by using the universal coefficient theorem for cohomology groups. The method used in this paper is a different way to compute digital cohomology groups of minimal simple surfaces. We also prove some theorems related to degree properties of a map on digital sph...
